A prayer for our times

July 3, 2017

God,

We come to you at a time when our people are in turmoil.

There are some bad people out there, doing and saying bad things, but you know us well and know that most of us are good people trying to do the right thing and most of us don’t know what to do and we aren’t very good at it. Hear our prayer God that we might listen hard to your message and call on our lives such that we know what to do.

God of all things and beings, today we pray that you are with those of us – most of us – who are good people trying to do good and not sure exactly what that looks like. We want to love all of our neighbors. And we too long to feel safe and secure in a world that is not. Hear our prayer that longs for a different world.

This morning we pray for those who are hungry, and we pray for those who have too much.

We pray for the least of these, and we pray for those who create a world where there are still the least of these.

We pray for those who do not have shelter, and we pray for those who shelter themselves from suffering around them.

We pray for those who are in the midst of war, and we pray for those who start wars, and carry out wars.

We pray for those who are putting lives at risk to protect other people, and we pray for those who are at risk from those that might hurt them.

We pray for those who are scared, who feel threatened. We pray especially for our neighbors here who have been subjected to hateful speech and threatening words in recent days. And we pray with all of our hearts and love for those who have said threatening things and hateful words in recent days.

God, we come to you at a time when our people are turmoil. You know and love each of your people in all our failures and brokenness. May you be with us as we try so very hard to keep up the long and hard work of love and justice in a broken world. We pray for all your people.

Amen.
